The guide was not good

I had a bigger expectation, not sure if the guide had enough knowledge about the history,he did not share much. Also it was not full day, but only half day, we finished around 1,30. I do not recommend, try different company.

Insgesamt ok.

Felt very manufactured

Our family of 5 was looking forward to this tour, based on reviews. We were disappointed. Prior to the tour beginning, communication was good and pick up was on time, so that was great. The van was comfortable and there was a total of 11 participants. Once on the tour however, it wasn't as good as we had hoped. Our guide gave us almost no information on the drive to the boat or at any time throughout the tour. The boat we went on was old and noisy and there were times it felt like it was about to break down. Viewing the stilted village from the water was interesting. It was when we walked through the village that it just felt manufactured and a money grab. People were selling school supplies and then purchasers were able to take these into the school. Nice idea! however we witnessed more and more groups also being 'persuaded' into purchases. Surely the children don't need dozens of books and pencils every day. Felt the children weren't able to actually learn as they were interrupted so frequently to talk to well meaning tourists. After the village walk we went back in the old boat out onto the lake. That was good. We however pulled up to a floating 'restaurant' tourist trap where it was another grab for money. For some reason, it is thought that tourists want to see caged crocodiles and snakes ... they are there for no other reason than to be looked at. I don't think that this tourist company is any different from any of the others, we seemed to be on the same circuit as lots of other groups. Summary, We were interested to see the stilted village but felt very uncomfortable about the use of children to make money.

Communication issues

We had booked a private sunset tour with Green Era Travel because we had an awesome tour to Tonle Sap Lake through them already (with a fabulous guide!) We had confirmed by email and text our desire for the sunset tour. But then our pick-up time as morning and when we were discussing the day's plans with our guide, he said this wasn't a sunset tour. If it were to be one, we'd be leaving much later. It was annoying and disappointing that we booked one thing and got another. Our guide was not great, either. His English fluency was very limited, and he was unable to respond to any questions that we had. He was very animated trying to interpret/tell the stories depicted in the carvings of the temples and we could not understand him. We asked for more brevity and he was happy to comply. Our lunch stop was decent - a restaurant in the park recommended by the guide. The temples were crowded - nobody's fault - we visited in high season. Be prepared to navigate crowds. Bring a ton of water with you - I loved that water was provided in the van - but you still have bring it with you to each temple because you are away from the car for long periods. Good walking shoes is a must! I wish we'd brought an umbrella to shield us from the sun. There is decent shade once you are inside, but there are long walks to get from car to temples. Our kids (11, 14, 17) had shorter attention spans, but are glad we went. Be careful with little kids though - it is hot and the tours take a long time. The temples are wonderful and worth the visit. We decided to hire a tour company because we wanted to learn and therefore we were disappointed with this excursion. I think it is a roll of the dice of who you will get as a guide.

Few sites visited

The tour guide Phy was excellent in his knowledge of the history. My complaint is that we visited only 3 sites.

Could've been better

The visit wasn't bad, nice variation to seeing the Angkor Wat temples, but we felt it was overpriced for what it was and felt like we were either wasting time or faced with a bit of a tourist trap. Firstly we were told to wait in our hotel lobby between 1-2pm. I've been on plenty of day trips before and have always been given a 15-30min window of pick up. Not only were we unsure when we'll be picked up, these guys arrived at 2pm - and we were first on the pick-ups. The boat ride was fine, good to see the houses on stilts (NOT floating), but then you had to either pay $5pp for a canoe ride or wait for 30-40 minutes. Waste of time. It wouldn't have been bad if this was part of the overall cost. The ride into the lake was good, but again, tourist trap. The boat sat there while smaller boat vendors came to sell drinks or snacks. Sure, it a way to make a living but at least give a bit of a ride around a small section of the lake first.

Interesting but a few issues

Pick up was a bit tricky, in the booking confirmation it says to email them with your hotel details. We did this and were ready waiting at 1pm as instructed, it got to 2pm and we hadn't heard anything so called the company who said they hadn't received the email. We were picked up and taken to the boat dock but didn't start the tour until 3.30. We really enjoyed seeing the houses on stilts from the boat, and seeing people going about their day to day life was really interesting. Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. We were disappointed that we missed out on seeing the floating market and seeing inside one of the houses, as we were informed that this is only done in the morning tour, so we felt the website was a bit misleading. The mangrove canoe ride was really beautiful. We didn't enjoy seeing the crocodiles who are kept in a small cage, and although our guide said he didn't recommend we saw it, we didn't have much choice as the boat stops here! I would recommend if you are going to do this tour go in the morning as you get to see more by the sound of things. With a few tweaks this could be a great tour.
