Day 1 – Siem Reap – Arrival day (L)

You can arrive anytime at the hotel during the morning before the group meeting at Noon, followed by a welcome lunch. Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and we will have three days to enjoy the town and its surroundings. In the afternoon, we will drive about 15 km southeast of Siem Reap to reach the temples of the Roluos group, a collection of monuments representing the remains of Hariharalaya, the first major capital of the Angkorian-era Khmer Empire. We will visit the three main temples of this site, Prasat Bakong, the oldest temple mountain of the Angkor-era, Prasat Preah Ko, with beautiful preserved carvings and Prasat Lolei, 4 tours built in the middle of a now dry baray.

Day 2 – Siem Reap (B)

After breakfast, we will drive to the Angkor site. We will begin to explore the complex of Angkor Thom. Our visit will begin with the South Gate, a beautiful introduction to Angkor Thom with well-restored statues of asuras (demons) and gods lining the bridge. Inside the complex, we will stop at the famous Bayon, a pyramid temple decorated by about 200 gigantic carved heads. We will also visit the Royal Enclosure, the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. In the morning, we will also visit Preah Khan, a labyrinth of pavilions, halls and chapels in a vast area encloses by four walls before to go to eat at a local restaurant and in the afternoon we will visit Ta Phrom and Angkor Wat. Ta Phrom has been largely consumed by the jungle and as you will climb through the dilapidated stone structures you will see many giant trees growing out of the top of the temple itself. At every turn you will expect to see Indiana Jones or Lara Croft step out from behind a fallen pillar. Ta Phrom looks as many of the monuments did when European explorers first laid eyes on them. Then, we will visit Angkor Wat, the largest and most impressive of all the temples. It is the best preserved of all the temples. Its layout and its scale are simply breathtaking, the wall surrounding the enclosure measures 1,000 by 800 meters and the moat, said to represent the oceans of the world is 200 meters wide. This amazing temple homes the longest continuous bas relief in the world, which runs along the outer gallery walls. As the end of the day will approach, we will proceed to the hilltop temple of Phnom Bakheng, climb the imposing remains and meet the crowd for a truly memorable sunset.

Day 3 – Siem Reap (B)

Today we will drive to Koh Ker, the most remote ancient royal city of the Khmer Empire. Koh Ker was the capital city of the Khmer Empire during hardly two decades (928-944). The main ruins at Koh Ker consist of an impressive seven-storey sandstone pyramid (Prasat Thom). On the way back, we will stop at the magnificent Banteay Srei temple – the Citadel of women, decorated with superbly intricate reliefs of male and female divinities, carved from pink sandstone contrasting with the main walls made of laterite. Then, we will visit the Cambodian Landmine museum and Rehabilitation Centre which promotes mine awareness and education for both tourists and Cambodian people.
Our last stop will be the temple of Pre Rup. The upper levels of the pyramid of Pre Rup offer a brilliant panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and is a popular spot to enjoy the sunset.

Day 4 – Siem Reap – Kampong Thom (B / L / D)

Today, after breakfast, we will drive to Kampong Thom Province, East of Siem Reap. A two hours drive by public bus through a beautiful countryside will take us to the central city. Then we will continue to a rural village by local transport where we will meet our host family. We will have lunch at the homestay, then we will ride bicycles to go to Sambor Prei Kuk. This is the setting of the most impressive group of pre-Angkorian monuments anywhere in Cambodia. There are more than 100 small temples, scattered through the forest. In the evening, we will help the farmer to cook our dinner before sharing a friendly meal all together.

Day 5 – Kampong Thom – Phnom Penh (B / D)

After breakfast we will drive to Phnom Penh by public bus. On the way, we will stop for lunch at the village Skun. If you are very hungry or just looking for a eccentric dessert, you will get the chance to taste the local speciality, the delicious famous fried spiders (Tarantula called A ping in Khmer). Never try, never know, that’s our motto!
When arriving in Phnom Penh, we will check in at our hotel and then we will visit Wat Phnom, a temple on the top of the only hill (27 meters high) of Phnom Penh.
Then, we will visit the NGO Child’safe close to the restaurant. Created and managed by Friends International since 2004, the ChildSafe project is developing a child protection network aimed at safeguarding children in Cambodia and other countries in the region from all forms of abuse, especially sexual abuse. We will have dinner at the restaurant Friends which is a non-profit restaurant run by street youth in training. All proceeds go to the organisation Mith Samlanh and the food is delicious.

Day 6 - Phnom Penh (B)

In the morning, we will drive 35 km north of Phnom Penh to Oudong. Oudong was the royal capital between 1618 and 1866 before the capital was moved to Phnom Penh. Several temples and stupas cover three hills. After lunch in Oudong, we will continue our tour to the Choeng Ek killing fields and the Tuol Sleng genocide Museum. This former high school in the suburbs of the capital was converted to a detention and torture centre - known as Toul Sleng or S21 - by the Khmers Rouges when they came to power in 1975. A genocide museum was established at Toul Sleng after 1979 and today it remains as it looked when abandonned by the Khmers Rouges. The pictures of hundreds of faces of those tortured there line the walls inside the old school. Most of the 17'000 people detained at Toul Sleng were eventually transported to Choeung Ek, a mass gravesite known to the locals as the Killing fields after the popular movie of Roland Joffre. Choeung Ek also serves as a memorial to those killed under the Khmers Rouges rule.
After dinner we will enjoy a theatre performance at the Sovanna Phum Theatre.

Day 7- Phnom Penh (B / L)

Today after breakfast, a cyclo tour will take us to the Royal Palace Complex. Besides the Royal Residence (closed to the public), the Throne Hall or Vinichhay Temple (the place where kings are enthroned) and the Chan Chaya Pavillon (where traditional dances took place), it includes Wat Preah Keo, better known as the Silver Pagoda, which floor is covered with 5000 silver plates. After this, we will walk about 10 minutes to the National Museum. Built around a central courtyard, the galleries, arranged chronologically, present a collection of Khmer art, mostly sculptures. We will have lunch at the Khmer Surin restaurant, set in a nice three-stored building, decorated with cushioned seats in the traditional Thai style.
