Day 1 – Phnom Penh to Takeo - (L / D)
First, we will stop at Phnom Tamao wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary has 2,500 hectares of forest-protected area. 1,200 of them were taken by the Department of Forestry for planning trees, and 70 hectares, consisting of five hills, have been organised as a zoo and wildlife rescue centre. This zoo was established to preserve and rescue rare and endangered local species from poachers and smugglers and accommodate a variety of animals including tigers, bears, peacocks, herons, crocodiles and turtles. Phnom Tamao is home to 70 Sun bears and Asiatic bears that have been rescued with the help of the NGO Free the Bears which aim is to protect, preserve and enrich the lives of bears and those who live alongside them throughout the world. An 11th century temple ruin in very poor condition (Prasat Tamao) sits at the top of Phnom Tamao. Afterward, we will also stop at the two temples of Tonle Bati, an important worshipping place and a popular local weekend picnic site where we will have our picnic lunch.
In the afternoon, we will visit Phnom Chisor. At the top of this mountain sits the well preserved Angkorian era temple ruin, built under King Suryavarman I during a period when Angkorian Empire was powerful and on the rise. This temple is Hindu as most of the temples of this period. One sees carved scenes with the Hindu Gods Braham, Shiva and Vishnu on sandstones lintels and pediments. The quality of the ruins and the splendid view of the countryside is well worth the effort of climbing the 412 steps to reach the top of the hill. Then, we drive to ourhomestay in the surroundings where we will be received by our host family. After a short rest we will help our host family prepare dinner and enjoy a friendly meal together.
Day 2 – Takeo to Kampot - (B / L)
We will continue to Kampot. Kampot is the durian growing region of Cambodia and is also renowned for producing one of the world’s finest peppers. On the way, we will visit some limestone caves with exotic rock formations and Buddhist shrines, like Kbal Meal or in Phnom Chhnok near Kbal Romeas. On arrival, you may be tempted to have a shiatsu-style massage, a foot massage at “Seeing Hands 5 Massage” or perhaps a “Kampot Massage by the Blind”, one of the two places offering massages by seeing-impaired masseurs and masseuses.
Later in the afternoon, we will take a boat on the Prek Kampong Bay River, which runs along the city for a sunset river cruise. Passing through a Cham village, this journey will lead us to the rapids at Tekchhou, a pleasant place very popular with the locals on weekends. We will return to Kampot for dinner.
Day 3 – Kampot to Bokor Hill Station - (B / L / D)
On the way we will stop at the former king’s residence to admire the lavish surrounding, before trekking to the Popokvil waterfalls a quite place where we will have a rest and a swim before having our picnic lunch. Then we will continue to the ghost town and visit its abandoned church, casino and other moss-covered buildings sitting in dense fog. In the evening your dinner will be prepared by your leader in the kitchen of the park rangers’ casern.
Day 4 – Bokor Hill Station (Kampot) to Rabbit Island (Kep) - (B / D)
After lunch, we will drive to Kep, a former health station on the edge of the South-China Sea. We will pass through pepper and fruit plantations, such as durian, mangosteen, rambutan, pineapple, grapefruit, coconut, mak prang and coconut plantations. Kep is famous for its seafood, especially fresh crab. Once the premium beach resort of Cambodia, the years of war caused a lot of damage to the city and most of the opulent villas fell apart. Since recently, Kep was mostyl a ghost town with ruined houses in tangled jungle. However, the city it's staging a slow but steady comeback.
Upon arrival, a thirty minutes boat cruise will take us on Rabbit Island (Koh Tunsay), a lovely little island that sits offshore from Kep. You will be able to enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal sea before having a beach dinner of outsanding seafood : it doesn't get fresher than here! We will spend the night in wooden bungalows along the beach of this quiet place.
Day 5 – Rabbit Island (Kep) to Phnom Penh - (B)
In the afternoon, we will drive to Kompong Trach a small city which main attraction is a series of limestone caves and passages that have been carved into a nearby mountain. We will visit the modern vat Kirisan, built at the bottom of Phnom Sor (White Mountain), from where an underpass goes to another sanctuary in the heart of the hill. The roof of a large cave has collapsed making a small enclosed jungle. Then, we will drive back to Phnom Penh where the tour ends. Finish Tour Phnom Penh excursions
